What is the general consensus on the crankshaft damper for the Daimler V8 engine?
I see some racers change it for a aftermarket item.
This is Larry Ligas' racer
My fast road engine will be fully balanced. Do I still need the heavy old lump on the front or can i use something lighter?

Crankshaft damper for fast road V8 engine?
Re: Crankshaft damper for fast road V8 engine?
Don’t know about the weight but originals are known to deteriorate and fall apart.
Colin,
I may be slow but I’m rough as well !

They have to be heavy to work, though I have heard of hydraulic dampers, whether they would be lighter or suitable in a car engine would need some research.

Hello,
The damper pictured in the thread looks to be supplied by ATI, an American company.
Looking at their website I can see a listing for Jaguar bit not Daimler, I do not know if the Jaguar one is a suitable fitment in relation to the V8 crankshaft. Perhaps someone will be able to shed some light on that.

Re: Crankshaft damper for fast road V8 engine?
The primary reason why Vintage race engine builders replace the front damper with a modern unit , is 2 fold.. age of the originals, makes them prone to problems effecting reliability, such as disintegration under high rpms ( the rubber bonding becomes hard and can de-laminate with age) which can have catastrophic results.. secondly the ones that are most commonly choose have slightly less rotating mass.(they tend to be silicone filled, rather then rubber bonded) and hence make the balancing process easier.

I have spoken to both ATI and Larry Ligas. The one on Larry Ligas' car is a Small block ford item. ATI has adviced me to choose the largest item possible.classiclife wrote: ↑Wed Nov 14, 2018 8:43 pm Hello,

My concern is that the originals I have all show some cracks in the rubber and I will be spinning the engine to 7000-7500rpm.
I will continue researching

Hello Sonus,
Is there any reason why the damper shown on the Larry Ligas race engine will not be suitable for you ??
Or do I take it he is running a small Ford block, hence the damper shown ??
Did ATI give any indication as what to look for ??
Regards.

Re: Crankshaft damper for fast road V8 engine?
reply to classiclife :- the jaguar front damper is an entirely different beast to that used on the Turner V8.. its secured by a tapered ferrule that fits on the crank nose.. and the hole in damper is much larger.. so they are definitely not interchangeable.. however.. quite a few parts made for the small block Ford ( 4.2- 5.0 litre) can be relatively easily adapted to the Turner V8..
Ive come to the realization after decades of disdaining US engine swaps, the Ford small block is a very good and highly practical replacement for the 2 1/2 litre daimler v8.. its fits the space very well in the daimler /jaguar body shell.. costs less then 1/2 the money to acquire and build.. and produces double (or more) the power whilst weighing close to same.. and is extremely durable..as regards tuning for more power..the skys the limit..

Not really, Ligas' has modified it slightly to fit the Daimler crankshaft nose. However I do not know the parts number and inaddition his is a race engine and mine will be a fast road engine.classiclife wrote: ↑Fri Nov 16, 2018 3:35 pm Hello Sonus,
