I am sure the viscous unit on my fan is not working properly as it spins very freely when the engine is stopped. My local classic car spares shop tells me that getting a replacement will be difficult. Anyone got any suggestions where I might find one? I don't really want to go electric if I can avoid it.

You can test the unit by spinning the fan by hand as hard as you can when the engine is completely cold. If it spins more than 5 times after letting go the clutch has failed. You should also feel some resistance.

Yes that was what I thought, there is no resistance and it spins for many more than 5 turns. Any ideas on where to source a replacement?

Is it not possible to repair these units? Failing that is there an electric fan conversion available?

The "clutch" is just an oil bath with a disk attached to the fan running in it. I once dismantled a damaged one to see how it worked. I have no idea what type of oil it was, probably hydraulic.

Possibly the oil has leaked out so you may be able to effect a cure by drilling a small hole and injecting some in then seal it up.

Yes I saw that but discounted it as the model list didn’t include the Daimler V8 but I have just called them and apparently it is the correct one. I have ordered so hopefully it is OK.

It is my belief that it is the same unit as for XJS V12. I got one a few years back from Moss.

I have now taken delivery of this unit along with the converter bush that is apparently needed. All looks good and no doubt will fit when I get round to it. Thanks again for all the help.
