Daimler V8 Performance tuning - knowledge hub

Post by Sonus »

Hi all

There are a few of us that are building highly tuned Daimler V8 engines. Knowledge about what is possible with these engines are spread across many threads on this forum and other sites. To ease the search and knowledge sharing about tuning these engines I suggest we gather links, tips and tricks in this thread for easy access.

I will try to update this thread regularly. Please post links to any relevant info about tuning the Edward Turner designed Daimler 2.5 and 4.5 V8 engines below. I suggest we keep this thread as a look up only and not a discussion thread as such(?)

Larry Ligas has modified VW air cooled manifolds to fit his 44IDF carburetors
Andrew Carpenter is experimenting with converting the original intake manifold to electronic fuel injection -
Daimlersteve has made a boxer/crossram manifold for horizontal weber carbs.
Hilborn made a few (5?) sets of mechanical fuel injection intakes in the 60s(?). Only one set is known to have survived. - https://bringatrailer.com/2016/09/12/hi ... art-racer/

Hello All
Bought this in Nova Scotia, trailered her back to NY.
The only modification I did was getting the motor half polished. I’ll let you know how much faster she is after I get the other half polished.
This was the motor info I received from the guy who built the car, in his words:
Matching number motor, 12.4 to 1 with an 8500RPM red line, bored, new pistons, rings, & bearings, connecting rods are stock. The cam is Daimler but has had a regrind, it was done in California The Engine Builder was Paul Hewitt in Brockville Ontario. The lifters were all replaced, the engine also has all new valves and springs the heads were ported and polished. The headers were built by Ian Gibson the aluminum Flywheel by Ian Gibson. The starter was set up by Ian Gibson , and I believe he said it was from a ford V6 Capri , the water pump is stock , the engine has an external oil pump , it puts out about 80 lbs. of oil pressure at idle .There is an extra oil rail inside the engine to pour oil over the lifters and cam shaft , this work was done by Paul Hewitt, there is an external oil filter , the filter is from a standard Ford V8 . the Distributor is a stock one but has a Malory Cap. Hilborn mechanical fuel njection System, Paul Hewitt did the machining of the castings and Hilborn installed the components. In 1960 Hilborn cast 14 units and these were the only ones they got running. There are 2 fuel pumps, 1 electric, installed by Ian Gibson and one on the fan belt installed by Paul. There is a fuel reservoir in the engine bay built by Paul.
She does hall ass!
King Regards
John

Just got off the phone with Niels Blegvad in Sweden. Niels has just made 6 sets of manifolds to take
(4) weber 40 idf’s. He also said we was grinding old and casting new cams for the 2.5. Niels can be
reached on Facebook in the Daimler SP250 Dart Owners & Enthusiasts club. If your not on Facebook and
have any interest I would be happy to help you connect him.

Thought I'd share a project that I'm halfway through, but unfortunately haven't got the time to finish.

Attached are scaled drawings showing 4 x 45 DCOE Weber side draught carbs utilising a custom inlet manifold. The intension was to make a carb' setup for fast road use rather than flat out racing. Where racing is required a shorter intake manifold runner pushes the torque high up in the rev range, what I've tried to do here is to increase the runner length (18") to keep low rev torque for street use. Manifold fabrication has been reduced to just a 45 degree bend and a single straight taper tube fabricated for each inlet (if that makes sense?)

More than willing to share all the drawings/ dimensions if someone would like to that the design further

Cheers Dave

Looks good Dave ,
Have made and fitted the same design complete with 4x 40dcoe2 carbs complete with linkages . will get someone more with more tech to load a couple of photos .
Its interesting how much flow is lost from bare head face compared to attached manifold and carbs , Have that Flowbench printout as well. Should have the HIF7 carbs this week to fit up and dyno next all going well.
