V8-250: Alternator Options

Hello,

With 90% of the work now completed on my Daimler, I took it for its recommission drive today and I'm pleased to say all is good. Thanks to those who have helped on my previous threads - plenty more of those to come !!

I did note however that the alternator a Lucas 11AC (ref: 54021122) is noisy and likely the original unit - without doubt bearing wear rumble and yet still charging okay at the moment.

Am now considering my options as to a replacement. Having spoken with decent auto electricians regarding this particular type alternator, their common warning note is the rarity of the rear bearing which if worn are like hens teeth to find and replace. In essence these units are becoming harder to source and overhaul.

That aside, I note SNG Barratt is selling an uprated unit (C25073) which is an identical swap for the current one in my Daimler - the upgrade provides an additional 10amps over the original 11AC.

https://www.sngbarratt.com/uk/#!/Englis ... 0487f60a19

SNG were unable to confirm if any additional fitment application was required.

As such, can I ask if anyone has purchased one of these units and if so, is it really a straight forward swap or is there some fettling / wiring amendments involved ??

DMG could not assist, which is a pity as I find them very on the ball and informed.

Failing the above, is there any other alternatives worth considering ?? I will not be asking extra demands on the alternator so not looking for a unit that matches the output of the National Grid !!

All advice welcome.

Thank you in advance.

Richard,

The one I am considering for mine, when the time eventually comes (still i n the bodywork repair stage) is from Fosseway where I am looking at getting the uprated brakes and Starter motor from too.

If you car originally came with an alternator, then the SNG Barratt one, as referenced above, will fit.
For cars that originally came with a generator, it requires the correct bracket seat up to convert to alternator(unless one uses the 'Dynalite' which is same dimensions as the Lucas C40L.) the original daimler dynamo bracket is something of an afterthought and both poorly designed and constructed.. it is one of the most common parts attached to engine that often break..It can however be strenghthened and any experienced metal fabricator can figure out the weak spots and how to strengthen the bracket to help it hold up longer. .
The later cars with alternator had a vastly improved bracket that holds up far longer.

Thanks to you both, the SNG route appears the way forward and ticks the boxes.

Fosseway - I love their photos & products, but as for parting with money, there are other priorities !!

All the best.

Richard.

Hi Richard,

Dragging this up from the past. How did you get on with this alternator (C25073)? I've just bought an alternator bracket for mine and am going to convert from the original dynamo. It's competitively priced and seems ideal. The wiring is irrelevant as I'll be making a new loom, but how is the fitment? Any issues? Also, I don't have an original pulley so any recommendation on that? Is the original the best size for this uprated alternator?

Cheers, Steve

Hello Steve,

That certainly is an old thread !!

I ended up getting the SNG uprated 11AC alternator, along with my original 11AC being rebuilt by an auto electrician - now kept as a spare. The SNG fitment is a straight swap for the OE 11AC.

You will need the correct pulley, however that said a pulley of not too dissimilar size will also do whilst a different size fan belt will be required. What is important is to ensure the pulley you use sits & fits properly on the alternator spindle. You can pick up V8 saloon pulleys from time-to-time on eBay.

Ironically, I am looking at removing the 11AC alternator set-up altogether and using a modern ACR alternator which dispenses with the external voltage regulator plus the associated charging system components. That's a back burner project, for the moment.

Regards.

Richard.

Thanks Richard. So is the C25073 an ACR alternator and does it require any other components? Like you, I want to do away with external regulators etc, and make the setup more simple to wire up. Are there any modern equivalents that physically fit the V8 brackets? I think I've heard someone using a Metro alternator.
Cheers Steve

Hello Steve.

C25073 is NOT an ACR unit, it is an uprated 11AC (55amp) meaning that the 4TR etc has to be retained.

When fitting an ACR unit, you can dispense with all those external Lucas AC alternator items as the ACR has an internal voltage regulator.

As for a decent substitute, with ACR, I'm looking at various options which can still use the existing Daimler alternator bracket. A local club member has gone this route [ACR] but made a bespoke alternator bracket which I need to have a look at.

Have to say the OE Daimler alternator bracket is not a great item, at all. It suffers stress fractures, of which I have seen a few, compounded by the fact it is an alloy based casting.

As mentioned, it is a back burner project at the moment. When I have that Eureka moment, I will write an article in the DM.

Regards.

Richard.

OK, thank you both. I don't currently (no pun intended!) have an alternator to modify, so I'm looking at buying an ACR unit to make thing simple. I'll have a mooch and see what I can get t fit. I have a number of dynamo brackets and also an alternator bracket. My son has a classic Mini so will try the one from there and see if I can cobble something together. Cheers, Steve
