intermittent no start.

Post by Pinto »

Hi all from down under,
My 1964 automatic V8 saloon has an intermittent no start either in park or neutral. There is no click from the solenoid. To day I put the car in park with the park brake fully applied turned on the ignition and use the button on the solenoid( had to use a stick as my arms are not long enough) to start the engine and it started, have since used the column and started.
My question do I have an inhibitor switch issue ? Can it be adjusted ? or do I need a new one.
Transmission is a BW 35 with PRNDL on the column.
Help with suggestions appreciated.
Regards,
David B.

I think the same thing happened to my Dart - the ignition switch produced a click but no start. The solenoid in the engine worked perfectly manually.
I was told that the solenoid needs a good push down and the ignition switch electro-mechanically didn't push it down enough, whereas my finger did. A new solenoid sorted it out.
Of course, it might be a faulty ignition switch....

Low battery voltage has caused me the same symptoms.

I suggest next time this happens that you hold the gear leaver slightly up or down [can't remember which] and press the start button again. If the engine starts then the problem is likely to be that the cable from the quadrant to the gear bod needs tightening. This can be done by removing the plastic covering the quadrant. This worked for me a few years ago.

Good luck.

I have had this trouble with BW35 before, albeit on V8 Rovers rather than Daimler . It may just be that the switch is slightly mis-rigged , and a sure sign of this is that if you jiggle the selector lever several times between positions you then get a start. If, however, it happens predominantly when the engine is hot , but not when it has cooled down for an hour or so, then the switch has an internal fault and needs replacement

Thank you all for your suggestions, it would seem I will have to do more checking.

Hi David,
Check if your brake lights come on when the engine will not start. The hydraulic brake light switch needs to be “in contact” to allow power to the solenoid.

That's a new one on me , Barry, and it's certainly not shown in the wiring diagrams for my car !

Hi Christopher,
You will have noticed that the Automatic will not start without you pressing the brake pedal. The signal from the brake light switch is the confirmation that the brake is pressed. Try starting with one of the poles on the switch dissconected.

You are right, I just checked the wiring diagram and the circuit is not shown.

You learn something new every day!
