Engine Lifting

Post by Warsash 2 »

Hi
My mechanic has just refitted the engine in Margarets SP and used a lifting beam I bought on e-bay item ID 283238580488 It is described as Shop crane hoist lift steel heavy duty engine leveller with handle 900 kg It has a tilt mechanism. All this for the grand total of £25.96 from ozsell2018.
I attach a photo of the suspended engine

These really are excellent bits of equipment for the workshop, which I can state from experience.

The photos you have added, really go to prove that and of course using the beam makes angling the engine a doddle.

Thanks for flagging.

Regards.

Nice pieces of kit Colin.

Here’s Matthew installing the engine and gearbox in a BSA last week. We needed to tilt the engine and had to make do with something akin to a shoelace! Mind you, it wasn’t as heavy as a V8 either....

They work well when tilting an engine to get it in an SP. With or without the gearbox on.
Colin,
I may be slow but I’m rough as well !

I found using 1Tonne rated straps very useful. They are readily available an eBay.

There are several ways to skin a cat. I slung my engine in with a couple of 1 ton webbing lifting strops slung round the inlet manifold...

This was easy since the gearbox and radiator were out of the car and the fan extension tube was off the engine. No tilting, it dropped straight in.

In case you're querying lifting from the manifold, here it is being supervised by the man himself, Russ Carpenter....
