Some help please.
As we did not strip the engine down and find the WSmanual unhelpful. What are the bolts on the photos for? I am not to good with photoshop so I hope you can understand the ones I am talking about

The one on the left is to jack the cam cover plate from the dowel location pins.
Can’t remember about the other. I don’t think it is used on the SP. could be wrong, the wife thinks I always am.

The second bolt is in the position that feeds the extra 'spray bar' for the camshaft on my engine.........

In a box of Racing s SP bits from the USA that i took possession of 15 years ago, there is a valley cover converted to flat tappet and with an alloy tube spray bar installed . -- tack welded at the front end and fed from the rear - 1/2 " dia with 1/16" spray holes .
Have just machined up the final iteration of the much modified std. inlet manifold . Over a weeks work in it . All alloy welded . With the need to machine theManifold / head mating faces to true them sq. the manifold now needs somewhat thicker gaskets. Machined to take the Rover p6 v8 SUs.
The flow bench is not available for another three weeks . Am dying to know what the flow differences are between the SUs and Manifold and the 45 dcoes on theirs . we are thinking the 40 dcoes are choking the heads.
Losing 30 odd hp worth of flow with the largest venturies on the 40 DCOEs.

The left bolt should not be there on an assembled engine.. it is (as stated above) a tapped hole, used to break the gasket seal when removing the cam cover assy by using one of the existing hold down bolts after they have been removed ..Id be sure it is either removed or backed out so that it does not contact the cylinder block.
The 'other' bolt is not there on any of my spare cam galleries..all of which have a flat machined spot where that bolt in your image is placed.. there is nothing below that bolt either in a 'standard' engine, other than a slightly raised area adjacent to one of the cam followers.. nor is there any oil feed gallery in that area..

Thanks for your replies.
The left hand bolt is as most have said is a jacking bolt with one diagonally opposite.
Russ Carpenter has identified the other as a retaining bolt for and automatic kick down bracket off an automatic car.
The engine comes off a car produced in May 1960 and the car it came from, as it was a factory exchange unit, is now in Settle. I do not know if it is an automatic or if any automatics were produced this early in the production run.

Checking in Brian Long's SP book.
It appears that from the 1960 advertising brochure that Automatic gearbox was an option from the start. I wonder if any were fitted or were they like the overdrive offered but I understand non were ever fitted by the factory.
Has anyone any information on early automatics.
