heater control panel

My project has moved from electrics (successfully completed) to heater. The problem is quite simple the control lever is floppy while at the valve end the cable is attached OK. I need to get to the lever end of the cable and the manual helpfully tells me how to do it. Remove chrome screws, easy, then withdraw the wooden fillet below the instrument panel. Anyone any advice on how to manage this tactical withdrawal? I don't want to use too much force as the veneer is still good around here.

Hi Keith
If you look underneath and behind that wooden fillet at each end there is 5/16 nut holding it in place

Ah yes, if I remove the trim panel at each side I see them. Thanks.
