To my surprise my shop found some aluminium parts during an oil change procedure. Now, it figured out that a complete engine overhaul is needed. So, we also intend to improve the crankshaft sealings at the front and end. Does anybody has experience with such sealings. As originally there are no sealings it might be necessary to construct new parts. I would be very glad if there is some experience within our members. KR Jörg

When my motor was rebuilt I bought all needed parts including the oil seals from Barry Thorne. If you are going to drive aggressively or race your car you should contact Russ Carpenter as he does a bespoke oil seal.

At the front, the timing chain cover can have a shoulder brazed in which in turn can be bored to fit a lip seal.
The rear can be machined to accept a special split lip seal. Both options are very specialised and there is a waiting list for the work to be done by the perceived first choice specialist.

under 'normal' operation, provide that the engine is in good condition and has been assembled properly, oil leaks are not a problem.. the rope rear crankshaft seal on the saloon engines works well provided the main bearings are within factory specs. In spite of having little other then 'scroll' on the crankshaft and thrower disc on inside, the timing cover rarely leaks oil round front pulley, unless the engine has issues with pistons or rings that create excess pressure and increase oil mist in the crankcase.
When these engine leak oil, its usually sign of wear setting in, commonly worn crankshaft bearings and piston /ring/bore wear is the real underlying cause of the issue..
