the part in question is plastic and gets brittle with age .. there are many 'other' engines that use a similar arrangement... the closest relative would be from the jaguar XK engines, which use use 2 similar design 'guides' for the lower timing chain (Moss motors part number is CO-21815 for the one closest in dimension and mounting style to the daimler V8 one ) which are metal with bonded rubber like surface on them.. Ive personally never done it, but am sure that one of these can be adapted to fit with minimal work.. the requirment would be to drill and tap at least one hole and possibly both in the cylinder block, in order to get it to fit in the daimler V8 application.. there is also some leeway to adjust clearance to chain, as the mounting holes in the Jaguar XK one are slotted to allow for alignment.. it needs to be close, but not touching the chain to be most effective....approx 1/16"- 3/32" along the parallel length between guide and chain would be correct..
I'll add :- the engine will work fine without this guide as long as the chain is not baldy worn..its Not a critical part..
