SP250 Starter Motor, Two different ends

Post by Reedweaver »

Does anyone know if its OK to use a M418G starter without the split pin on the end?

I have got two starter motors, both are M418G, 25521D but one has a split pin and the other nothing. (See pictures)

Many thanks,

I get the impression that photo 2 is an interference fit and set in situ; whereas photo 1 has a removeable washer + collets which are held [as you say] by that split pin. Perhaps the split pin starter is an earlier design and may lend itself to better overhauling opportunities due to the make-up of this facility.

If you have checked the spring length is correct, then I would say it is suitable.

That said, I would have liked to have seen more of an image on photo 1.

Thank you, spring lengths are indeed the same. (Sorry the pictures are for reference and not of my two starter motors)

What I was worring about is the quality of the pinion drives differ. The old one(removable washer with split pin etc) is heavy and appears well made. Compare this to the other one and feels cheapish and lighter somehow...

This is the common tale of old quality parts -v- modern not such good quality parts.

Bearing in mind the starter motor is only called upon briefly to spin the engine, I am certain that both will be okay. Personally, I would go with the better quality item as a starter - so about the pun !!
