Hello,

Towards the end of the year I am looking to remove the engine and auto g/box from my 1968 V8-250 saloon.

Looking through the DLOC forum archive material I have identified the following unit weights, all bar the Autobox weight, as such I am happy with the lifting capacity requirement of engine & transmission combined.

Engine (dry) = approx. 240kg

Autobox (dry) = tbc

Manual g/box (dry) = 50 to 60kg

Is the Autobox heavier or lighter than the manual g/box (dry) ??

I know that, where fitted, the engine & manual g/box needs to come out through the engine bay. However I am undecided if it is best to do the same with the engine & Autobox OR remove the Autobox first from under the car and then pull the engine out separately.

Having not tackled this particular Daimler job previously, I will be very grateful for any advice others may have.

Pull it out in one piece, your engine lift will need to lift quite high and you need to be able to tilt the whole assembly quite a bit as you manoeuvre it out of the engine bay.

Alternatively you can drop the entire assembly on the subframe, but you have to get the front of the car quite high off the ground ideally on a post lift, raising the car, leaving the subframe, engine/gearbox on the floor.

I wouldn't drop the gearbox off first you're making more work,and I definitely wouldn't want to do it laying underneath the car, Automatic transmissions are heavy.
Post lift, transmission lift and a mate is my preferred method

Hello Stu,

Many thanks for the advice and I am glad I asked - that all makes sense.

With regret no post lift, just a decent hoist and a few chums !! I may look at raising the rear of the car a little higher than the front to assist with lift & swing - however not looked in to that yet and may not be advantageous.

I presume the Autobox is heavier than a manual unit ??

The engine is not quite as heavy as you suggest - nearer 200 kgs . The autobox is definitely heavier than a manual/OD box but not by more than about 25 kgs. You are probably talking about 280 kgs altogether . Taking it all out together upwards is the easiest but

1.As you suggest, , raise the rear of the car by at least 6 inches and preferably a bit more

2. An angle adjuster ( about £30 from machine Mart ) is a huge help and I regard it as essential

3.Engine and box have to come out at about the steepest angle you can manage, gradually steepening the angle as you come forwards initially and then reducing the angle as the gearbox comes free of the gearbox tunnel

4.You need height clearance of about 8 feet to be sure your lifting arm foes not foul rafters etc

Thanks Chris,

That is very useful info, the reason I quoted 240kg dry is that there is a document on the DLOC archive section showing just that.

However, if closer to 200kg then all the better !! If I run with a total of approx. 300 / 315kg I think I will be close enough to the money.

Absolutely agree about the engine leveller - a cannot do without item, especially with the incline anticipated for this task.

I'm sorry , LOMH, but I can't agree with your method , because the rear chain will almost certainly foul the throttle cross shaft on a saloon. The best place to connect the lifting tackle is to thread it through the inlet manifold

Yes Christopher I was only talking about the use of the two hoist.
In fact it is not the trottle shaft the problem. But with this set up I can't use the rear mounting and a floor jack is needed.
So I made that :

And I can now pull in or out the engine by myself in 30 minutes when the auxillaries are removed

LOMH : thank you for that reply. Am I correct in thinking yours is a Left Hand Drive car ? ( I deduce this from the fact you have no problem with the throttle cross shaft, which is definitely a problem in RHD cars )
