SP engine removal
SP engine removal
Hi , in the near future I intend to remove the engine from my SP, my problem is that I only have a single garage ( 16'x10') . have other members removed an SP engine in such a small garage and if so , what problems did you encounter ,Best regards ,Terry .
Re: SP engine removal
There is no problem removing the engine in the garage, you do need to plan what and where you are going to work on the engine, if in the garage then the car must be nose in if in a work shop then tail first. I do recommend purchasing a wheeled engine trolley, depending on what you expect to do on the engine remember it is heavy even without the heads and manifolds working on the engine on a pallet or the ground takes a toll on the back even if you are young.

Re: SP engine removal
I agree with Ian about the engine stand.
Also you need a crane/hoist with a longer jib than usual as the centre of the engine's weight is a long way back.
good luck!

Hi
A photo graph of the engine insertion which gives an idea of the set up required. The engine was taken out in bits so I have no photos of it
You can hire a engine lift and the beam is available on E bay for about £25.
Regards
Colin

Re: SP engine removal
Hello Colin,
Thanks for posting those photos.
Out of interest, did you go for a 2 ton crane as I would expect the jib / arm to be longer than the 1 ton version ??
I will be removing the engine from my V8 saloon in the Autumn and as such am assessing requirements - I have posted a separate thread on this pending job; but as you have supplied photos I thought I would ask this particular question.
The engine leveller is a critical component IMO.
Many thanks.
Richard.

Re: SP engine removal
Hi Richard
I would go for the larger hoist as the cost of hire is not much more and the smaller one is a bit marginal depending how many of the ancillaries you have removed. I am not sure as I have never had it done but I thing the Saloon is a bit more difficult due to the hieght of the grill assembly and the length involved with the torque converter and the gearbox on the automatic. I believe this has been discussed before somewhere on the forum but I am not cleaver enough to find it.

Re: SP engine removal
Lift the whole lot out in one go then split the engine from the gearbox, when replacing do the reverse, much easier fiting the box on out of the car, that's using either a crane or frame lift. The crane engine hoist gives you the option of maneouvering the engine about after the lift whereas the frame lift requires moving the car

Re: SP engine removal
Many thanks Colin and Ian - all points noted.
My understanding is that raising the saloon rear, goes a long way to assist exit & entry of the combined engine & g/box.
Best wishes.
Richard.
