Water pump and pulley

Post by keithj »

Hi, I have now progressed to refurbing the cooling system. New water pump to replace the rattly old one and new viscous drive to replace the old "spinner". However I have a problem with the drive pulley. I had difficulty getting the pump off with the pulley on but no problem (I thought) get another pulley and replace the whole lot. It seems DMG can't get the new (secondhand) pulley off their water pump either so have sent it away to be removed by a specialist. I am now thinking that I will have trouble fitting it to my new water pump without damage. Ideally I want to bolt the pump on before fitting the pulley but then of course I can't use a press or vice but if I get the pulley on first it is not possible to reach the nuts holding the pump. I can't be the first with this issue so any suggestions? Possibly strip more from the front of the engine and fit pump and pulley together?

OK so I can see lots of people have seen my query but no suggestions. I now know what is necessary and it is not a roadside fix so if you have a wobbly water pump sort at home!! Just in case I am not the only one who has to change the pump you seem to have to remove the dynamo, belt tensioner and the front water chamber. It is then possible to remove the pump and pulley as one unit. You then (probably) need to take this and the new pump to a garage or similar to have the pulley removed and fitted to the new pump. Re-assembly obviously the reverse of the above. The crux of the problem is that the pulley is a REALLY tight fit on the pump (as it needs to be so the fan doesn't drop off!!) and a normal gear puller won't do, certainly in the confines of the engine bay.

Hi Keith, I don't have an answer to your problem but I may know a company who can, EP Services Cable Street,Wolverhampton. WV2 2RJ
01902 452914 they re manufacture water pumps and managed to remove my pulley which I would without doubt have broken the whole thing.

Along with John's suggestion, I can add that EPS are an excellent company and they also give a lifetime guarantee with their refurbished units. I have had WP's for other classics reconditioned by them but not a Daimler unit - I have always found their prices very competitive, bearing in mind the additional benefit they offer.

I will be interested to hear how you get on if you do use the company.

Good luck.

Hi, sorry to come to this late, but the earlier pulley was different to the later alternator version which has a larger outer pulley, I did remove my pulley when changing my water pump, the old pulley cracked after using a 30ton press and luckily I had a spare one which is still on the car after 15 years. so they are a pig to get off without damage. heat would help but not on the new pump unit? I have never tried to remove a Turner V8 pulley in situ as it's pressed on, however the way to remove (it can be done with a hammer and vice) is to heat the pulley with a gas torch on the periphery, not the centre, the shaft is stainless steel or a similar non rusting steel and has a different rate of expansion, the impeller is the problem as it is smaller and of cast iron cracking easily, the shaft and bearing is from a Jaguar 2.4-3.8 series. refitting is the reverse heat the impeller and pulley before fitting, ( popping the shaft in the freezer also helps refitting)

Thanks for your suggestions. I have told DMG to forget the secondhand unit as SC have a new one. My local garage, run by two septuagenarians, reckon they can put it on the new pump. "Used to do it all the time" in the old days apparently. Hopefully everything will go smoothly but in the meantime it's given me chance to renew all the water pipes....except the really awkward "T" shaped one under the carbs, but I will persist.

Hi, if you need to change the flexible water hoses than either get a silicone set or the copper modded version. I have the silicone set and had no issues or leaks from them and have been fitted for some time. well many years ago. Tony

KJ : unless you are going to pick up the new pulley in person, so that you can see it before you pay for it, make sure that you pay with a credit, not a debit card so that you can claim your money back from the credit card company if it turns out that it is not , after all, in stock

Pulley fitted. I've just had the pleasure of watching someone who knows what he is doing, do his stuff. It took an hour nut with only a very big vice and scrap nuts and bolts he carefully squeezed on the pulley. Getting it on level was not easy and getting on to the right depth critical. I'm just glad I didn't attempt the job although having seen it done I would have more chance next time but only with a much bigger vice than I currently have.
