I recently discovered a leak from the half shaft oil seal. The original seal was of the leather type which are now rare to find.
I purchased the DMG replacement which is the modern neoprene type.
The shaft diameter where the seal runs is 1.312in. The replacement seal I/D is 1.260in. ie. 0.052in. interference!

Re: Dart rear axle oil seal
I purchased new remanufactured leather oil seals for my rear axle from
http://www.oilsealuk.co.uk
Johnathan Welch is extremely helpful even going to the lengths of having a batch of Salisbury 3ha half shaft oil seals made so that I could purchase two.
I re fitted leather oil seals as after investigation the leather seal has a larger sealing area than the modern neoprene seals so may well seal better on old half shafts.

I would guess that the seal material would determine how tight it can be. If it is soft and flexible then I don’t think it would be a problem as the oil should be able to lubricate the contact area as the shaft rotates. That said it doesn’t want to be like a bag of bogeys allowing oil to seep through.
Colin,
I may be slow but I’m rough as well !
