Hi All,
I am due to change the rear axle pinion seal and will change the oil at the same time. Unfortunately this evening I lost
myself in the maze of internet information regarding what type of oil to use in classic cars. Can anybody recommend
a good current modern equivalent oil for the rear axle to those listed in the service manual?
Thanks in advance Paul

Hello Paul,

A decent EP90 Hypoid such as Castrol will do you fine.

Whichever oil you use, ensure it is GL4 spec only.....................................GL5 is completely unsuitable as it can damage older classic car internals due to its modern make-up.

If the diff is a bit noisy you can use EP140 - which I know some classic vehicle owners do.

I've attached the Classic Oils link FYI, it provides a good choice of oils and if nothing else is a useful guide before buying; be it from them or elsewhere.

Many thanks Richard, sorry if its obvious , but should I be using mineral based or silicone based oils in the daimler? This is my first time adding lubs. Paul

Hello Paul,

No apology required.

I have always used mineral based oils in my classics, V8-250 included.

Best wishes.

Richard.
