SP250 spares prices?

Post by pjbowman »

Anyone have a take on what a fair price would be for a spare SP250 engine that is in good condition? What about for a transmission? I'm contemplating buying (another) SP250 that comes with the extra parts (plus more), trying to determine what a fair price would be for the entire lot.

Thanks for any input.

A professionally overhauled and rebuilt engine will now cost around £6k exchange. A unit that is running with good oil pressure and no leaks I'd suggest could be worth about £3K. A lot depends on how good the 'good condition' is. An engine and gearbox from a saloon in unspecified condition went recently on eBay for £1000. Genuine SP250 engines and manual gearboxes are rarer and command considerably more.

I sold a completely seized engine without a flywheel for 1,000 pounds to a specialist so don't go below that figure as they are rare!

Thanks all - a follow-up question: how to identify an SP250 engine from a saloon engine? Is there an indicative number that identifies it one way or the other?

This should help.

Excellent Nick, thanks! I haven't seen the spare engine yet, so don't know what is or isn't attached, but the block numbering should tell me right away. Much appreciated.

Cheers!

Hi
Just a word of caution it is not unknown for engine numbers to be changed so that the car has the mythical all numbers match connotation. I also understand the very late engines were the same block.

one approach is to ask :- What would I want to pay for it ? I suspect there are more SP250 engines than V8 2 1/2 litre saloon engines in USA..(saloons were never officially imported) the former have more value due to the cars being rare and parts hard to come by.. I paid $ 2,000 for 2 dismantled saloon engines last year and drove approx 500 miles to collect them ..this was a good deal as everything had been cleaned and inspected by the previous owner..(a LOT of time spent.. and obviously one could see exactly what one was buying)..so no hidden horrors in what is commonly a crapshoot at best. Previously i paid $ 2,000 for ONE Sp 250 engine that proved to be junk..and in excess of $8k for a supposedly fully rebuilt and highly modified 5.0 version of a 4.5 litre Turner V8 (which I have not opened up to check so far..wisdom came into play and I fitted a US V8 in the project it was destined for...seller told me the rebuild cost had been in excess of 13k euros) occasionally saloon engines can be found for less than $500.. rebuild costs vary and are usually very high .. a 'sound' core engine generally runs in the region of $6,500 to rebuild properly... if it has heads shaved below limit/corroded water passages and excess valve train wear it can be a lot more. BTW..if anyone in USA requires sound cylinder heads.. I have extra's in various conditions.
If its for personal use.. 'used' engines should always be stripped, cleaned, fully inspected and any remedial work done before fitting to your car, along with rebuilt cooling and fuel delivery systems... Unless you are seeking a myriad of headaches and have the desire to do the job several times over..
