Hello,
I will be removing the cylinder heads from my Daimler V8-250 and reading the WSM it suggests using a 1/4"UNF bolt to hold the rocker gear assembly together when removing.
Presumably all the rocker gear assemblies require this prior to removal ??
Out of interest, does anyone know how long the bolt needs to be to facilitate such a procedure ??

The bolt should be fitted to the front of the RH rocker shaft pedestals and the rear of the LH ones. The bolt length is not critical, you need enough thread to pass through the pedestal and lock it to the rocker shaft (otherwise the rocker shaft assembly is in danger of springing apart as you remove it). I'd have thought a 1/2" of thread would be more than enough.

Nick is correct in their location (One at the front, one at the back, opposite ends to the tab locked bolt heads) mine are both at the front just because thats how I temporarily assembled them

May I temporarily go off topic and hijack this thread just for a moment? I will anyway:)
The picture seems to show some rework on the block around the waterways.
Is that a cavitation repair? Has "JP Weld" or similar been applied and ground down carefully with wet and dry wrapped around flat steel block or alternative to reproduce a flat mating surface?
The reason I ask is the I am at the stage of waiting for my cylinder heads following overhaul and am considering performing this repair as I have minor (I hope!) cavitation at the same, but not at all, positions.

The picture also appears to show the pistons fitted to the wrong sides !

Hi Rob, No repairs on the block just the head water passageways which is a typical fault and easily repaired. Block was acid dipped and crack tested, then bored and head faces just surface ground a fraction. Think what your seeing is just some discolouration around the water passages.

Well spotted with the pistons they are indeed in the wrong place with regards to the manual, but I've always numbered engines from the front looking aft, with number 1 at the front and right/left looking aft, old navy habit. Engine numbering does now conforms to manual with the engine now in the car so right/left reverses as the manual dictates looking forward for right/left. Imagine the timing issues if you got it wrong

I take it, although appears unnecessary, that the rocker assemblies can - if required - be locked down at each corner ??
Albeit RH front and LH rear does the job.
