V8-250 Saloon: What's this part ??

Post by classiclife »

Hello,

I received from DMG my cylinder head gasket set - all good.

Within the set are these 2x items (photo attached) and I presume they are for a SP vehicle, as I cannot locate them for the V8 saloon. They are circular chrome rings.

Be very grateful if anyone can confirm the part, please.

Many thanks.

Richard.

They look like the exhaust manifold to pipe joint rings.

John
The SP uses a 3-lobed flat gasket.

Hi Richard, they are the exhaust manifold to exhaust pipe dealing rings. P/N C18405/1 item 41-3 page 198 of Parts Catalogue.
You will have to remove the old ones from the end of the pipe. They crush as the clamp is tightened up so can be difficult to remove.
Best rgds

Be advised that when installing these rings (or 'gaskets'..same part as used on Mk2 Jag/S type/420/ XJ6) ) on the exhaust downpipes its wise to smear them liberally with 'anti seize' compound ( I believe the common one available in Uk is 'copper coat') to help enable future dismantling..(These proprietary compounds were originally developed for use with boilers, where corroded hardware and components are almost always difficult to dis-assemble)
Cars that are used in inclement climates tend to corrode badly at the point where exhaust downpipes enter the manifold..The combination of ferrous metals, an asbestos type gasket meterial wedged between aluminum, allied to the effects of high heat and moisture, is lethal when it comes to parts coming tightly bonded through years of corrosion.. they can be VERY challenging to remove once corroded in.. as can the actual studs that bolt into manifold to secure pipe in place.. the studs often break off where they enter the manifold..and are not easy to remove due to the shape and bulk of manifold making it very difficult to clamp into a drill press etc..
