Hi TORQUE STARTER MOTOR

Post by Warsash 2 »

Hi
The V8 250 has now started playing up. Perhaps it is a bit jealous of the attension been given to the dart lately. The first problem is that the battery although testing as fully charged has no power when tested so I assume that a cell as failed. The second problem is the starter motor has jammed. I thing I will fit a hy torque one but the only one I can find is supplied by M & C Wilkinson's. I have never heard of them and I wonder if any member of the forum has or can recommend a supplier. Most of the usual suppliers on seem to supply only ones for the SP.
Thanks in advance.
Regards

Colin

Hello Colin,

I have also considered this option.

However with a proper performing battery, clean wiring & terminals along with the starter being in a serviceable condition; the V8 should spin over without any issue.

One of the big problems with any inertia starter is the build up of muck on the sliding unit; this really can hamper the performance. This area needs to be cleaned thoroughly and lubricated with graphite. If all the above boxes are ticked then the hi-torque requirement begins to wane somewhat - certainly for me.

Daimler V8-250 starters (M418G) are straight forward to overhaul either via DIY or a decent auto-electrician. In fact a friend of mine who is an excellent mobile auto electrician will be checking mine over prior to refitting.

A point that is also worth mentioning is to ensure that you have a dedicated earth strap in good clean condition that runs from the engine / gearbox to the car body. This earth strap does play an important part of ensuring that the starter has a decent earth to complete the circuit. You cannot rely solely on the metal to metal connection of the starter and its mounting point.

As to a hi-torque supplier, I've not really researched that due to the above stance.

Regards.

Richard.

Hi Colin

I bought a high torque starter in 2011 from Ratsport, which appeared to offer the most competitive price at the time; it listed a model for 'Daimler V8' which went on my 2.5 V8 saloon with no problem. Perhaps the old one would have soldiered on, but I was keen to give the engine the best chance when starting. It has worked faultlessly ever since.

the 'high torque' starts that is supplied for the Austin healey 100/6 and 3000 fits the Daimler V8 saloon... Im unsure about number and pitch of ring get teeth on the SP 250 so cant say if same starter will fit .. there are several suppliers of these...the company I recommend is 'Gustavson Machine'..

The starter I purchased was generic in nature and just needed the output gear changed to match the Daimler SP250 which had 11 teeth. If I recall it fitted many British car Jags, Triumphs and MG's but the output gear was the difference.

The original struggled to rotate my rebuilt engine in the test stand but the geared reduction one although half the weight rotated it without an issue. It also means you don't need the original solenoid as the new starter has it incorporated.

The place I purchased mine from has some interesting technical data on their website:

I just bought a high torque starter from David Manners. Wasn’t on their site, but might be now.

I do not know about the virtues of the Hi torque starter motor but M&C Wilkinson is a very respected company dealing mainly in rebuilding Jaguars, If they sell it, it will be good.
