V8 250 Tie rod removal

I having a problem splitting the joints, the outer rods are easy to split using a normal splitter tool, but I can get a splitter to fit the centre tie rod ends as there is no space for the tool.
Has anyone got any tips that may help me to remove the centre tie rod, Is it worth getting a fork type splitter and a big hammer? I don't want to damage the power steering box.

Its OK I had a go at the job today and by removing the drop arm from the power steering box was able to put the assembly in the vice and separate it.
New tie rod end now fitted.

For future reference the taper can usually be undone by hitting the end of the tie rod, or whatever, a sharp crack with a hammer along the line of the rod.
This usually distorts the circular female taper bit sufficiently to loosen the male taper part. Leave the nut on loosely to protect the threads should the hammer hit them accidentally.

Adding to Ian's post :- my preferred method is to use a suitable long pipe or bar as lever to put pressure on the rod .. remove the tie rod nut...use the lever to apply pressure.. and whack the HOUSING the tapered part of joint goes through HARD with a big hammer.. the combination of leverage and shock of whack will generally do the job..
The tapered wedge type of ball joint separators , whilst very effective at doing the job, almost always will damage/rip open the boot.. so if you use this type of tool, be sure to have new boots on hand .. the cup type ball joint separators, that use a bolt to put pressure on the tapered pin are not very effective .. they tend to distort easily and when sufficiently distorted, add frustration because they tend to slip off the pin when tightened..
