V8-250 Saloon: Rear Window Replacement

Hello,

My intention is to replace the rear screen on my V8 saloon with a working heated unit, which I have recently acquired.

If anyone has carried out the following task, I will be grateful for any advice and tips etc, on top of the instruction contained within the WSM.

My understanding is that it can be a bit of a job, with some owners having the screen fitted professionally - if so, who has used which company.

Thank you in advance.

All the best.

Richard.

Hi I have done this both on my v8 and jag mk2 and it is pretty simple to do, I found it best to fit the seal on the glass and thread a nylon cord around the lip and cross it over at the bottom of the window and just use some Vaseline to help it along and start at the bottom area and push the window and seal down and make sure the cord is on the inside, that's how I did it so whether that is the correct way I don't know but it worked for me. make sure the window is in the centre of the car as well. ease the lip over with a plastic tool helps and sometimes I had to push the window around a bit to get the corners in but don't be too scared about forcing it in. hope this helps the new seals can be a pig and I found it better to soak the seals in hot water for 1/2 an hour before which I think helped. just take it easy tho. then just fill the seal outside with windscreen sealant and wipe of the excess with petrol etc. Tony

Hello Tony,

Many thanks for your reply and outlining your technique - sounds encouraging and doable. I will probably wait until the Spring to fit, with the warmer weather and an excellent tip re the hot water & seal.

Thanks again.

Best wishes.

Richard.

Yep. a job that is a worry but the screens are pretty tough, I did my dad's jag mk2 and it was a tight fit and he thought I was going the crack the screen as I was being a bit(vigorous) with it, so I let my dad leave after he told me if I do it like that I will break it. so I put the screen in ok and then ran into the house shouting that I smashed it and that he wanted to see the mess I had made only to find that everything was in order and not smashed. My dad laughed and said "I can't believe you're my son" and went out and had a pint. anyway good luck but use a good quality sealer as some go hard after only a couple of years. I think I used a modern polymer based sealer when I had to re-seal the rear screen. tony

Hi Richard
I replaced the rear screen a couple of months ago, the new seal was from D Manners and the instructions were to put the rubber in the car surround then fit the screen, Some parts of the rubber pulled away from the surround on fitting but was able to force back in using a plastic trim tool.
The windscreen mastic gets a bit messy but is easily cleaned up with White spirit.
