V8-250 Saloon: Alternator staked through bolts

Post by classiclife »

Hello,

Hopefully someone can shed some light on this topic / issue.

I have a Lucas 11AC alternator on my V8 saloon and want to strip it down.

Reading the WSM, it says that the 3x through bolts holding the alternator body together are staked - I presume this is a method to ensure the nut and bolt do not become loose via vibration. You can clearly see there is a stake in each bolt / screw head that prevents a slotted screwdriver being used to undo the bolt.

I've never come across this securing system (staked bolts) and I will be glad to hear from anyone who knows how to remove these so the bolt can be undone and then removed.

Many thanks.

Richard.

If you can gain access with a small grinding disc you cut try to re-cut the screwdriver slots.
A chisel or centre punch could be struck at an angle to the head to shock the bolts loose.
Would it be possible file or grind flats on the bolt heads so you can grip or spanner them loose.
If new bolt can be sourced then drill, chisel or grind off the bolt heads.
Colin,
I may be slow but I’m rough as well !

Use an old screwdriver (large blade one) and grind out a slot in the centre of the blade so you can engage the two tangs either side of the protruding bolt. Then you can undo it easily.

Thank you Peter and Colin, I agree those suggestions are the only practical alternative; wanted to make sure I was not missing something too obvious to notice !!

Regards.
