Automatic gear selector adjustment and gearbox issue

Your 2500 rpm/50 mph definitely is consistent with running in 3rd gear . The actual rpm at 50 mph will depend on whether your car is early ( 1963-5) or later 1965-68 which had a higher ( lower numerically ) rear axle ratio . Early cars about 3000 rpm, later cars about 2750 rpm. It is common for the tacho to read slow as it ,( or more accurately the camshaft driven ac generator ) ages , as the field strength of the magnets diminishes

The gear selector issue has now been sorted by adjusting at the gearbox and at the quadrant. I recently had the good fortune to be introduced to a very fit young fellow who is actually well advanced into his seventies but still loves to work on old cars. Learned lots from this man over the few days we spent sorting problems and enjoyed great company as well.

Had to replace disintegrated rubber bushes on the drive shaft . My drive shaft was also well out of alignment which we fixed by using a straight bar with four long studs or equal length to judge the vertical and horizontal adjustments needed for the driveshaft (Thank you Russ)
