ARRRRGGGG!!!! It Cracked!

Post by Bud »

Backed the little car out into the sun on the driveway and dusted her off and we're getting ready for a Sunday drive when the wife says your windshield is cracked!!
I have my steering wheel clocked with spokes at 12 and it was directly behind it and I had not seen it.
Where can I get a new correct size screen here in the US?
I remember posts about short center dimension units.
My insurance girl came up empty.
Nothing anywhere on the net.

Any alternate part number besides 81-635100

Thanks for any info,

Bud....

I think ARRRRGGGGG!! is also the noise your wallet will make. Mine cracked and I learned from the forum that it is one of the worst jobs to do on the SP250, so I had it done for me (very competently) here in the UK.
About £850.

Ouch!

John Carey has just ordered 3 new ones, one being reserved, so I guess I will be the second when they get here in a couple of weeks.
Apparently they do not have a favorable survival rate when shipped as a single item so he orders multiples and they are crated and slow boated over the pond for best results.

FYI the correct replacement number for the glass John says is FCW 120

I bought a new SP250 windscreen from Barry Thorne tel. UK 01306 711789 is it 44 1306 711789 ? or mobile: 07885 882416

One reason mine was cracked was suggested as pulling on the side of the windscreen when getting out of the car.

Bud,

Why not have the crack fixed.. Glass Technology in the US have some of the best resins around, and may just save you from what is an unpleasant job in replacing the screen. If it is just a chip, it should be an easy job to fix, if it is a crack then they can drill the end of it to stop it from going further and then fill it with a resin. Yes you will still see a scar, however a much better prospect than replacing the screen.

Broosky.

Drill a hole in end of the crack, where have I heard that before.
Damage control class at Submarine school that's where.
Never figured out how to do that even during a drill in the simulator at New London. Just got really really wet.
In theory it is supposed to work, but has anyone ever been successful doing this tricky little job.
This crack started from the edge in so there is no saving the windscreen so say the pros and the DMV.

FYI: These resin repairs are for chips, and cracks of less that 6" from the chip only, all else is replace.
So if you have a chip get it attended to immediately to take advantage of the technology, or else.....

Someone on here says replacing these are a breeze and has done many.
Time for windscreen replacement class or a refresher on whys and don'ts and do's with all the tips and jigs please.
I did it by myself twice to get one in and do not need to repeat this pattern.

Damage control class at submarine school? you have 10" long plus drills? I should cocoa, at 1000ft + it will blow the drill out of your hands, just blow main ballast much safer. Did they teach you to weld it at the same time
The biggest difficulty is unscrewing the frame is if it hasn't been done before and the screws not greased, always remove the frame from the car to fit, and use a soft covered surface, the older screens were difficult as the fit on the LH side wasn't the right curvature, but I understand the new screens have overcome this problem. If you did Lego instead of Meccano as a kid you may have problems there are screws involved

Ian

Do I get a badge for having fitted one of the older screens myself? I remember the problems which the different curvature of the left side caused me, but I've not ever heard that that was a feature of those screens. That screen has itself since been replaced fairly recently with one of Barry's tinted ones and the relationship of the w/s frame to the left door window channel has altered, perhaps that's why. I plan to adjust the channels soon, before fitting the new door trim.

Is this why windscreen replacement has achieved such legendary status as "The Most Difficult Task" to do on a Dart? From the pain etched in my memory I reckon that it would have been much less difficult to do without that built-in challenge.

Cheers

Geoff

Secure all watertight doors, pressure in the boat, blow negative, blow all main ballasts, full rise on the bow planes, all ahead full, emergency surface!

What 10" bit, 1000' + on a diesel boat? Fatal!

When I talked with John Carey he said they used to do it on the car and just undo the left top connection, wiggle the old one out and grease the new one in and reconnect the frame while holding their breath.
