V8-250 Saloon: Under Bonnet Insulation - Adhesive

Post by classiclife »

Hello,

Over the next few weeks I am looking to fit the 2x under bonnet insulation sections.

If you have done this job at some stage, I will be very grateful to know what adhesive you used plus any tips for doing the job.

Thank you in advance.

Regards.

Richard.

Hi, the only glue/adhesive I know that could withstand the engine bay heat is the high heat glue from woollies, it is normally used on vinyl roof applications, but as a safety measure you can put thin wire across the material and tie it off. but there might a better solution with a polymer adhesive? you don't have to put the standard insulation on if there are better alternatives, I put on a foil backed heat-proof foam from the usa and it is still stuck up ok after 15 years. that's all I know on the subject tony

Hello
I went for the fibre glass panels excellently made at a very reasonable price from Christian Demler over here, a very neat job indeed.

As can be seen from the pics I first taped some aircraft cabin insulation (fireproof!!) to take up the undulations and then just laid some more to take up the rest of the space and fitted the panels which hold the whole lot in place when the securing strips are re-rivitted in place. Can't hear anything more from "up forrard"!

This, if nothing else, dispels the concern that any adhesive used may fail resulting in the insulation falling anywhere unwelcome, exhaust, fan etc!! The whole lot is also easy to remove if necessary which is more than can be said for the old insulation I had to scrape off, b****r of a job that was.

Should you go the glue route, I'm sure a heat resistant adhesive is available somewhere, I use a PU adhesive to attach rocker cover gaskets to the rocker covers, upper surface only, sticks like billy-o, lots of bad language and tedious hours spent with plastic scraper to remove though!

Regards
Rob C.
