V8 Saloon: Speaker Console - Oval Hole Purpose

Post by classiclife »

Hello,

I am in the process of retrimming my V8 saloon.

With regard to the speaker console, does anyone know the relevance of the oval hole immediately above the speaker and behind the ashtray. I certainly do not recall anything connected to it etc.

My thought is that it is an access hole - but for what I cannot recall; or is it to do with heat escape from the radio although an unlikely suggestion !!

I am assuming it must be for something, as I cannot see Daimler wasting their time on making nice shaped hole for no purpose !!

Currently I have not cut the leather covering this oval hole and if there is no reason to have it open, then I will leave it covered & the leather uncut.

Many thanks in advance.

Regards.

Richard.

No one has answered you yet, so I'll have a go. Have you looked into the hole with a torch? Is it over the transmission tunnel?
I'm not familiar with a V8 250 but in a Dart it would be access to the gearbox dipstick through the top of the transmission tunnel forward of the ashtray and behind where a Dart's radio is situated. It should have a rubber plug and is a devil of a job to get to if there is a radio in the way. Even if I'm wrong about the purpose of your hole, have you got access to the gearbox dipstick somewhere?

Hello John,

Many thanks for your reply - much appreciated.

The position of the hole is directly under the radio and has no connection with tunnel access for transmission, although I like your thought pattern. You can only see the oval hole when looking upwards from the floor pan, hence I am assuming it has a relevance to something North of the speaker position. I will need to "dry-fit" the unit once I have finished trimming it; wth that done I may get a better understanding as to its significance. I do not think it is to access the radio as this can be done from behind the console.

Hope that makes sense ??

If I get a chance, I will upload a couple of photos this weekend.

Thanks, again.

Regards.

Hi Richard,
As far as I can remember the hole is used on Jaguar models only.
The part was used on many different models. Jaguar and Daimler.
There should also be two round holes ,one on each side.
These would take Plastik tubes for the heating to the back ,running trough the center console on a Jaguar model.
On the Daimler they are just blocked with a rubber plug as no air is going to the back on a Daimler model.
Hope this helps.
Chris

There are 2 holes in the gearbox cover, on the left for the gear select cable, 1 on the right for access to the rear brake band adjustment. Are these the holes you are referring to?

Hi All,
I have recently removed the console on my 64 Daimler auto as the factory fitted HMV radio did not work I say factory because there were mounting brackets on the console that looked like a factory fitment.
and the radio had corresponding brackets. The hole you speak of was in my console and the vinyl covering was cut to be folded and glued into the hole looking for all the world like 50+ years old.

Hello,

I have posted a few photos to show the location of the oval hole and the outline with the new leather in situ. The remaining edges now require tailoring and glueing, then job done.

Many thanks to those who have posted to date and I hope the photos will assist further.

Regards.

Richard.
