Carpet fitting advice

Post by PaulR »

Hi, I'm fitting a new underlay & carpet set in my Daimler V8-250 and would like to know how must people fit the felt. I've glued it down along the sills & over the gear box and tunnel, but was wondering if it should also be glued down in the footwell? I did wonder if there was a way to secure it without glue in case it needs to be lifted at some point in the future? The trouble is when it comes to fitting the carpet on the sills and over the gearbox, I'm not sure if the edges of these carpet pieces should go over or under the footwell felt. If it's over then the footwell felt will have to be glued down solidly. I was hoping to find some instructions on the web can't find any.

When it comes to the footwell carpets I'm hoping to secure these with Velcro so at least these can be lifted in order to clean them.

Thanks

Hi, I fitted the footwell felt or do you mean underlay? mine was a green colour and I placed it in position using the holes that should be cut out to match the carpet securing clips, the edges should go over the top of the underlay/felt and then be covered by the top cover carpets, the front footwell carpets should be secured with similar clips as the rear floor area. some pics might help your issue please. ton

Hi, I've attached a few pictures to help illustrate. I've glued the underfelt to the sills and over the gear box tunnel. Should I then fit the carpet to the sills and gear box tunnel before fitting the underfelt to the footwell, which would mean the footwell underfelt sits on top of the edge of the sill and gear box carpet. Or should I fit the footwell underfelt first and then the sill & gearbox carpet on top, which would mean the edges of these carpets sit on top of the edges of the footwell underfelt, which would mean I need to glue down the footwell underfelt?

thanks

Hi, ok looks like you have different underlay to mine? I fitted the G/B with carpet running under the top footwell carpet as in underneath, same with the cills area, but use very strong glue for the cill area. as for the gluing the underlay I left mine loose and clamped in using the top carpet buttons, I only glued the underlay on the G/B tunnel and prop tunnel and rear lower seat area, and the front footwell angle against the interior bulkhead, when correct the top carpets should overlap and cover the lower underlay sections. on my manual there are 2 carpet pieces 1 under and a top section as seen in this image of how it's fitted on my car, that's how I did it anyway, I can't get access to my other resto pics at the moment. but do it how you see fit, all the best Tony

Hello Paul,

I am just in the process of retrimming the interior of my V8-250.

Basically you need to glue and secure complex curves & angles but not required with lay flat sections such as the footwells as these will hold tight.

GB tunnel, sill, prop tunnel and square box sections (under the seats) need doing first as these have curves and sharp angles which can only be held in place and form the correct shape by glueing. With that done the 4x footwell underlay sections can be positioned accordingly; the driver bulkhead area has complex curves and angles and to assist this part of the underlay will also require gluing. That should have completed the underlay laying.

When fitting the carpets the above applies regarding curves and sharp angles. The flat pieces of carpet can be placed accordingly and as buckfield has stated the foot carpets will cover any unbound or other material overlapping.

Hope that assists and I have supplied a few photos.

PS: ignore the door cards, they are being replaced as part of the refurb !!

Regards.

Richard.

Richard, what are you using as underlay/heat/noise suppression?

Hello Graham,

The silver sheets you see in the car is Silent Coat (SC)and I have used it extensively on other classics; it's an extremely good product and cheaper than Dynamat. I have also started to use Dodo mat which is a cheaper version of SC but I would say it is equally good.

The SC thickness I use is 2mm and the Dodo matting is 1.8mm, hardly anything in it really.

You can obtain SC in 4mm and 6mm, but it then starts to get noticeably heavy and more expensive; the Daimler only requires 2mm IMHO. If I were to kit out another Daimler I would be than happy to use the Dodo mat solely. Lesser built vehicles would need 2mm to give that extra insulation and / or heat deflection.

The black underlay and carpet is all part of the full retrim kit from BAS International.

Hope that assists ??

Best wishes.

Thanks Richard, very helpful. My DB18 has nothing and is incredibly noisy so I’ll add this to the project list. :-)

Hello Graham,

Here are a coupe of links regarding my last:

https://www.deadening.co.uk/collections ... TkQAvD_BwE

https://www.deadening.co.uk/products/do ... -hex-sheet

I've purchased all mine via eBay seller Sound Deadening Shop; in packs of either 12x, 20x or 40x depending on the size of the job.

If your car is quite noisy then you may wish to consider 4mm for the areas that transmit most noise - which I know you are going to say "is all of it" ?? !! :D

I presume you have underlay to fit on top of the SC or Dodo ??
