Oil Drips from Rev Counter Cable - Dart

Post by rogerharrop »

Hello,

When I bought the car 18 months ago there was a problem of really nasty black oil occasionally dripping from the rev counter cable onto my legs and onto the carpet. Fitted a new cable and there's been no problem since.

Now - just as I've fitted new carpets! - it's started again - just the odd drip.

Connections are tight so where's it coming from??

Any ideas please.

Many thanks

Roger

Could it be Capillary action or that Archimedes screw thing. Would greasing the distributor end of the cable help to stop oil travelling up to the gauge. Only a guess.
Colin,

Roger assuming you have not mistaken the speedo drive for the tacho drive, which would make more sense as oil from the gearbox would be the cause, as there is no source other than the distributor and tacho take off from it.

Perhaps there is oil in the distributor body from over zealous lubrication of the distributor by the PO which is leaking into the cable then on onward up the drive cable. I have never heard of oil getting up the distributor drive shaft to that extent, but I suppose it may be the cause.

Perhaps if you disconnect the drive cable at the distributor end, move it away and see if oil comes out of the take off point when the engine is run. Syd

Unsure of this oil seal's location on the shaft, but it could be the culprit.
