Manual gearbox oil drain plug 2.5 saloon

Post by Alpine Daimler »

Something nice and easy and straightforward, I think I know the answer but here goes :

Is the oil drain plug fitted with a copper sealing washer, mine is not, or I cannot see one anyway, and is not 100% free of leaks, my common sense tells me it should have but I can find no mention of it in the service manual or parts lists.

And another thing, if I may, is a magnetic pin fitted to the drain plug to catch hold of and retain all the iron bits which get ripped off the gears and syncros when I change gear in a maladroit fashion when the gearbox is still cold, I always forget to let the thing warm up before I risk 3rd to 2nd whilst moving, when warm its perfect....still....after 53 years and 4 months.

Hello Rob,

Speaking from other classics owned in the past, copper sealing rings are generally fitted to engine sump plugs and gearboxes; there may be the odd car that does not have one.

The bonus as you know for using a copper sealing ring is that it absorbs any surface imperfections between the face of the plug and that of the sump or gearbox.

Personally, I would go the crushable copper washer route - many modern cars still use the system.

Regards.

Richard.

Hi Rob,

Yes, it should have a copper washer. According to David Manners Daimler V8 Catalogue (which may be downloaded here: https://www.jagspares.co.uk/page/downloads), it's part C2296/1 and can be seen in the diagram on plate 1, item 74.

regards
Paul
