Assessing Daimler V8 cylinder heads

Post by Dan62SP250 »

Hello everyone,
I have an opportunity to buy a Daimler V8 engine out of a '65 saloon car. A friend has purchased the car but it is notably rusty, interior is shot, veneer dashboard is de-laminating, and the engine is out of the car and apart. The car is likely to be parted out, so I have expressed interest in the engine if that happens. This is all in the Northeast USA.

Relative to my SP250, I am aware the saloon cars have a different sump shape, different exhaust manifolds, a distributor lacking the mechanical tach drive, and a number of other differences.

Back to the engine: it is apart, and it appears from the photos that the cylinder heads have been refurbished. (my thought is this could be good or bad depending on the specialist...).

Is there a specification on allowable 'skimming' or removal of material from the cylinder head surface? How is it measured (is there a dimension from an accepted datum)? Are there other things that should be assessed? I am aware of the water jacket corrosion issues, and need to check threads and especially spark plug threads.

Thank you in advance for advice and information you can share to assist.

It would be best if the car was going to be saved complete, but it does not appear that is going to happen.
Thanks,
Dan

Hi, The cylinder head thickness originally should be 3.000ins. and I believe they can be machined to minus 0.025ins. without alignment of the inlet manifold being affected.
I have seen extra thick head gaskets available on ebay but, I have personally never needed to use them.

Dave.

I think the Thick head gaskets were made by John Nash

Thank you Dave and Kevin. The dimension and allowable skimming tolerance are exactly what I was seeking. Kevin, it is good to know that thick head gaskets are available if needed.

Best regards,
Dan
