Powerspark

Post by Tennant »

Hi Guys,

I just fitted a Powerspark Ignition trigger. No adjustment necessary, and my tickover went up from 400 to 500 RPM straight away. Test drive up to full power acceleration OK. We shall see if it can withstand the heat under the bonnet. I packed the old points in my tool bag just in case!!

Hello Barry,

I have used Powerspark for numerous years on various classics and never had an issue; in fact I will be fitting a Powerspark EI module when my distributor comes back from the Distributor Doctor - he is rebuilding it: http://www.distributordoctor.com/

The biggest problem that owners have when fitting EI modules, not just Powerspark, is that they are fitted poorly and with the incorrect gap between the module and the shaft ring. This gap does need to be checked, in 99% of cases all is well but there can be instances when an ever so slight adjustment is required.

I note you are retaining the points which is a good idea, whereas I just carry a spare module.

Compared to some classics, the under bonnet temperature in the V8 saloon is quite tame - I'm sure you will be fine.

Good luck and will be interested to hear how you progress with the installation over time.

Regards.

Richard.

As with other triggered systems make sure to use the correct ohm rated coil and recommended plug leads. It makes an apparently huge difference to voltages supplied and random failures per previous Pertronix threads.

I concur with Bud, having had problems recently with my Pertronix Ignitor 1. They are very sensitive to voltage and even with a 1.5 ohm flamethrower coil I had problems. You might need to run a separate feed from ignition switch rather than take a feed off the SW side of the coil. Also the 'hall effect' electronic ignition units don't like copper cored HT leads.

Now that there are decent condensers available again I have reverted to points.

As mentioned, having copper core HT leads is no-no; this is because copper has negligible RFI suppression and that has a knock-on effect with electronic modules.

I have always used a Lucas Sports Coil to give extra output and to finish off I open the spark plug gap slightly from .025 to either .028 or .030. As the sports coil generates a larger healthier spark, it needs & copes with a larger plug gap which in turn benefits the fuel combustion.

As with any electrical system - they are great when they work !!
