SP 250 gearbox/overdrive

Post by Paulkennedy »

I am sure this has been covered on the old forum. I am about to change the oil in my SP gearbox with overdrive what level on the dip stick should the oil be and what sort of oil do other SP owners use.
Thanks, Paul Kennedy

I use a straight SAE 30 oil (specifically Castrol Classic XL 30) Paul. From memory the fill level with overdrive is about ½" above the original fill line on the dipstick.

Also, see this link

Agree with Paul on the level but I use SAE40. I think either is suitable.

Recently had my overdrive refurbished by Overdrive Spares in Rugby who seem to have done a good job.

I would have to check but I seem to remember that when Robert Grinter did my gearbox and overdrive he now recommends 20/50 for both engine and gearbox. 1/4" higher than the original level on the gearbox dipstick.

HI
The Sheffield who supplied my overdrive suggests SEA 30 and between 1/2" to 3/4" above the mark. From memory I added more until it worked correctly.

Hi All,
It is important NOT to use a multigrade or EP oil because the additives in them will attack bronze and brass components.
Oil specialists recommend SAE 40 grade, and experience shows you need to fill to at least 1/2" above the 'High' mark on the gearbox dipstick.

Dear Guys
Wilf is quite correct as EP oils contain the additives that will attack yellow metals.
Technically use oils to standard GL4 NOT GL5 as these also contain the corrosive additives.
I also run my g/box oil level 1/2" above the high mark BUT the oil is so clear I cannot even see where it is so I cut a strip of paper and use a rubber band to attach it to the dip stick; this way it leaves a very visable trace!!!!!

Thank you every one for your replies. Kent I liked your idea about finding the level as I have started filling the gearbox and as you say with the new clear oil it is nye on impossible to see where the level is. I just hope I don't lose the band and paper pulling the stick out as it is quite a tricky little operation.
Thanks again

A slightly more technical way of seeing the level on the dipstick, a squirt of black cellulose paint, the level shows up a treat. No rubber or paper additives this way and easy enough to remove the paint.
