Smiths heater tap

Post by Crossley Stephenson »

I have just rebuilt the Smiths Heater for my SP250 and fitted it all up today only to find there is a leak at the tap, I suspect between tap and heater. I can't find any info about a seal. There is a rubber convex grommet but should there be a seal of some description between the two faces? Rubber/neoprene or RTV?

Cheers
Michael

Michael,

my heater tap was siezed solid & broke as soon as I touched it. I bought a new one from eBay & it came with a sealing ring

Maybe the seller will just sell the rubber seal ?

Thanks Steve, it looks pretty much like an 'o' ring to me. Is it?

Michael

As long as the pipe is not out of shape the grommet will provide a good seal when the two screws are tightened and should not require anything else. Good luck

It is an 'O' ring of unusually large section Michael.

when assembled it is compressed on three faces to seal against the valve, the adaptor and the heater matrix tube.

It's always worth replacing after disassembly - Barry Thorne has new ones.

I had the same problem on my Zafira causing a wet carpet, to fix it needed almost dashboard removal. I added my favourite remedy of Bars leaks to tide me over until the major job done.
In the end the fix became permanent and I never needed a major job of replacing.
Just a thought as I dont know how big a job to do on your car.
