Original steering wheel R & P

Post by dansdaimler »

Is it possible to keep the original steering wheel with rack and pinion steering conversation?

Yes, but putting the indicators back is a big job.
I decided to put the original steering wheel on and have a blank boss that matched from a Morris Minor and have the horn and indicators under the dash.
You need to cut the splines off the old steering column and weld them on the new shaft, see photos - it also slides like the original set up.
The bottom photos shows the old splines on the new steel spitfire column . When welding the thing on you need to taper both edges and run the weld deep into the V to ensure you get a perfect weld.
The top picture shows the new horn push that is off a Morris, it does not have the slots in for the indicators.

This is where I put the indicators - made a 90 degree bracket behind the dash to mount it on - - I think you could wire up the horn in the normal way, but I elected to put the horn on push button again on a 90 degree bracket behind the dash on the rhs of the steering wheel.

I believe Bryan Purves does a rack and pinion conversion which retains the original wheel.

I found a 4 channel remote and receiver for about $20 usd. Took the transmitter apart and wire the original right, left, and horn contacts to 3 of the channels. I had to change the antenna to a wire type as it had to old style telescoping type) and it all fit in the original hub. In the engine bay I put the receiver that would trigger some heavier duty relays to the original turn signals and horns and had a pretty slick wireless system with the original wheel. I never got to install it because I kept the original steering box.
