It is really quite crowded at the top front of the engine with hoses etc , so to get a strobe in at the top is rather hazardous with the holset fan rotating nearby. In addition , there are few if any feasible markers to use as a fixed datum where parallax would not affect the result seriously. I imagine this is why the markers are underneath

sounds like you have a LOT of issues to sort out.. re the overheating coil..did the car have a 'polarity'change as some point ? if so were the LT coil wires switched ? early coils are marked SW and CB.. sw is power.. and CB goes to points with positive earth system.... until you change polarity and they need to be other way round.. a coil marked + and - is easy.. the wire to points goes to same side as cars battery earth or ground wire.. coil will also overheat if left with ign on and points closed..(its basically a transformer designed to run on AC current..ie the current MUST break frequently) you may have a choked line from tank to filter.. you may have a choked line inside tank.. this reveals itself if the fuel pump is hot.(the SU pumps are prone to overheat if they have a blocked suction side) . iF the car sat unused for a good while it may require all the relevant systems going through.. good luck.

Hi

Please see my earlier posts. The condensor/capacitor swap improved things greatly. Old coil and new one are marked +/-.
Followed up advice of others re points setting.
Drove to MOT today and it ran pretty well. Passed - no advisories
