I am in the process of replacing the heater/radiator hoses on my '68 Saloon, and I was wondering if anyone can provide information and/or photos of the cooling pipes that run across the intake. My car seems to have had some "custom" copper pipes added at some point, with copper tee fittings in the middle where the coolant goes into and out of the intake, as opposed to the rubber tees that came in the kit I purchased. I presume that the old ones corroded at some point and someone did the best they could with what they had available to them.
Before I go and make my best approximation of what should work with the hoses I have, I was wondering if anyone can point me towards what would have been in this late saloon from the factory, as I'd prefer to approximate it as much as possible.
Thank you,
Tom

Re: V8 250 Cooling Pipes
I don't know if these will help but my car had similar and I have just replaced the cooling pipes with a new ss kit and silicone hose set.
I also had the carburetors rebuilt.

Re: V8 250 Cooling Pipes
Phil Glennerster replaced my pipes with stainless steel which probably means he has the old rubber ? ones lying around which were perfectly OK. He's probably replaced them on all the cars he restores, so he should have them unless he bins them. Note: he restores SP250s so perhaps the saloon ones are different.

Re: V8 250 Cooling Pipes
It is quite common for the rubber "T" pieces to degrade and leak over time; in my experience more so that the other rubber pipes in the cooling system. I recall reading a posting in the old forum where forum members in Australia routinely replaced the rubber T pieces with either copper or steel T pieces.
Robert Grinter replaces the metal pipes in the cooling system with stainless steel ones when he does an engine rebuild but uses the rubber T pieces.
So my guess is that it becomes a matter of preference. Nothing wrong with metal T pieces (provided they are of the right composition for the coolant that is used) I imagine. Unless, of course, a more knowledgeable forum member can correct my viewpoint . . . . . . . . . . . .

A couple more photos that might show things more clearly
Re: V8 250 Cooling Pipes
As with many things relating to these cars the small bore engine hoses utilize a design lacking in common sense.. one solution is to use the stainless steel line kits..but you still have the issue of those formidably stupid and unique to these cars rubber 'T' hoses to connect it all .. then there is the issue of varying bores on these pipes (3 sizes to deal with as i recall) personally i'd pitch the whole lot and redesign it for simplicity.. firstly the water heated manifold is completely unnessecssary in anything but arctic conditions.. so those pipes can be eliminated altogether .. along with a the dumbass rubber T hoses..you can then run copper tubes to and from heater..thereby simplifying the whole mess. if you want 'stock' appearance simply replace the T hose with copper Ts and use same size rubber hoses throughout.. sounds like someone already did that.. so use what you have and improve as required to make it clean and simple..

Re: V8 250 Cooling Pipes
I was told that the old T section rubber suffers from degrading from heat and petrol possibly leaking over time from the SU and that renewing with the new silicone ones should sort that problem out.
However
The T sections are quite a flimsy bit and maybe they should be replaced every 10 to 12 years or so…. But the silicone ones seam more substantial than the old rubber so may last longer ,, mine are only 2 years old -
Has anyone else had the silicone T hoes, and how are they performing?

Re: V8 250 Cooling Pipes
Hi Marc, had a all silicone setup on V8 for 6 years, no issues at all, even when I had the reinforced rubber type they started to crack after 3 years but no leaks from them, have no electric cooling fan fitted and engine has never overheated so they must be able to take the temp, although I always have my backup bypass hose just in case they do go pop! all the best Tony
