SP251 - official or unofficial classification?

Post by John-B »

I have heard SP251 mentioned occasionally and yesterday we got a new member Hanco who has one.

Is this an unofficial classification for C-spec. cars or official? I know Laurence Jones has a view on this, but he isn't a member here.

I know that Laurence also has a special-bodied SP (LHP 307F http://st.motortrend.com/uploads/sites/ ... t-view.jpg ), what is the model name for that? I think it may be a prototype. It's also shown here http://www.motortrend.com/news/12q2-196 ... eam-tiger/ underneath the Sunbeam Tiger.

In short, what model specifications are official? Just SP250? with A, B & C specs? Are SP251 and SP450 (for 4.5 litre V8s) just accepted unofficial names for variations?

As I understand it John, the designations SP250 and SP251 were official factory designations of RHD and LHD cars respectively - nothing to do with A, B or C specs.

Laurence's Jaguar produced 'Mk2', LHP307F, is commonly known as the SP252 and I believe this was also a factory designation.

SP450 is an unofficial name coined by owners to describe the SP's retro-fitted with the 4.5 litre V8.

All "new" postwar models had "1" added to the chassis designation for LHD versions.

A LHD Conquest, therefore, would be a "DJ251" - Name -= Conquest . Chassis Designation = DJ251
Similarly, LJ200/201 for a Lanchester 14.
So, the LHD SP would have been Name = Dart. Chassis Designation = SP251. Where the confusion comes is that when Dodge decided to take a fit of the "mardies", the name was dropped and rather someone think of a new, exciting alternative (Dervish would have sounded quite good!) reverted to SP250.....................Name (LHD) = SP250. Chassis Designation = SP251
Similarly DF304/5 for the Regency, DJ256/7 for the Conquest Century,

Etc, etc, etc ad nauseam
