Consort Rear Spring Hangers
Re: Consort Rear Spring Hangers
"Nick - do you think you will ever put that old car back together again?"
Re: Consort Rear Spring Hangers
SUCCESS! and it wasn't too much of a challenge. I took the front bracket off the spring so that I could see how it all went together properly.
Now for a go at the back pin/bolt. Took the nut off, found a suitable spanner - it didn't want to move at all. Plenty of squirt with penetrating fluid and try again, it moved. Worked the bolt backwards and forwards then continued to turn but the bolt wasn't coming out, the bush was turning in the spring. Got a heavy duty G clamp and clamped the curly end of spring. This increased the resistance to the bush turning but the bolt wasn't coming out. Removed G clamp, applied heat, re-fitted G clamp try again. I won, gradually the bolt came out.
Someone had assembled it by doing the bolt right up and chewing away the flat that should hold the flat of the bolt, the same with the front bracket. the back pin was seized in the front one wasn't.
The hanger on the chassis is also partially seized so I have left it soaking with oil and will try again at a later date.
Now to clean up/ re-furb all the bits ready to go back on. Then I'll do the other side!

Nice work, Nick; it sounds like the previous work done on the shackles was thoroughly botched. Some people should leave the maintenance of their cars to those who know what they're doing! Seeing the bushing was turning in the spring it sounds like the chassis lube system wasn't working, and although it's not a particularly good idea to convert to grease nipples this may be a case of needs must.

Thanks Steve.
The chassis lube pipes to the back of the springs were broken. When my Father was alive a mechanic did the king pins and bushes (I am 99% certain) and I seem to remember he said the lubrication system wasn't working, and he replaced the front end with grease nipples. I decided to fit grease nipples to the springs so that I can make some progress towards getting the car in one piece and mobile. When I get that far I will start sorting out the rest of the bits and pieces.

Re: Consort Rear Spring Hangers
I hope this is not getting boring for you guys.
The things you discover when you take things apart. The reason I couldn't get any grease in the back spring hanger was because the bush had turned and the hole was no longer in line with the grease nipple. The bush had turned because it was seized, because the lube pipe had broken off. Somebody had already had a go at it, note the damage where it has been clouted long and hard. It took me an hour and a half of working it backwards and forwards to get that off.
Press on regardless!

I agree with that as well.
The biggest problem seems to be that there are far more "experts" about than those who know how to the job!
