No wonder my brakes were poor! Took of the drums tonight and everything is oily.
Before I start pulling off the hub, can anybody tell me what type of oil seal is in there and where I can find two?
Thanks
Graham

Re: DB18 rear hub oil seals
The original Payen oil seals for a DB18 rear hub were D117 - standard seal with leather sealing element, spring loaded. The dimensions are
shaft diameter 2 1/4"
Outside diameter 3.194"
Width 1/2"
If the Daimler parts suppliers don't have them, you may be able to find a modern seal which would fit by checking the dimensions with a firm such as Simply bearings on their website. The following company might also be of use :

Re: DB18 rear hub oil seals
I did my Consort rear hubs last year which I think are the same. My local supplier told me that seals of that size are no longer available 1/2 inch wide unless you have them made. I settled for the next available size which was 3/8 wide. Just put them in flush with the edge of the hub.

Re: DB18 rear hub oil seals
Just for the benefit of a future reader really, this size of seal had only one other application and that was on the auxiliary gearbox of a 1939 Leyland Lynx.No wonder the cars cost what they did new and thereafter in repairs.
Re: DB18 rear hub oil seals
Just as a guide I think the seals I got were about a fiver each.

Re: DB18 rear hub oil seals
Just a thought. Think there are paper gaskets too ? Seem to remember they allow oil onto the shoes too.

Re: DB18 rear hub oil seals
Mmmm paper seals are quite likely. I have received the hub oil seals from David Beales but probably won't get chance to disassemble the hubs until the bank holiday. I'll have to make my own.
I've had the drums sand blasted - that's got rid of the oil contamination!
I'll keep you posted on what I find.
Graham

Re: DB18 rear hub oil seals
There was no gasket on mine she I took it apart. I checked the mating faces for burrs etc and reassembled with Well seal .
