1950 DB18 Windscreen Wiper Switch

Post by Hedgie »

Hi All,
I'm still restoring my 1950 Daimler DB18 DHC (see photo below), and we are now doing the electrics.

I have a question above the Windscreen Wiper Motor control. I know that ones engages the Wpier Blades by using the knobs above the dashboard, but cannot remember whether there is a separate switch which turns the Wiper Motor on and off, or whether the act of engaging a Wiper Blade using the above knobs compkletes a circuit and turns the Wiper Motor on. Can anyone advise?

Also, if there is a separate switch where does this normally reside?

If anyone is interested, I have uploaded a record of the progress made over the year in restoring my Daimler to Dropbox at this link.

Many thanks for all answers received.

Best regards

Tony

I've had a look up a wiring diagram for the 1950 DB18 and it shows what was normal Lucas practice at the time. There should be a permanent live feed from the control box to the wiper motor. It is then earthed through a switch. One wheelbox (driver's side) has a switch incorporated in it, the other doesn't. If it doesn't switch on reliably, check there is a good earth to the switch case. Any other failing is a case of taking the wheelbox off and investigating the spring contacts.

The only thing I`d add, Tony, from my own experience, is that if you connect the wrong side of the switch to earth, then it won`t turn OFF.
