DJ254 - New DHC - fuel changeover tap

Post by Beat Weibel »

Hello

The changeover tap of my new DHC (changing the fuel supply from normal to reserve) is leaking. I tried to preliminarily repair it with household sealing but at the end I need to replace the tap or try to seal it with new cork gaskets.

Does anybody have a spare one available? Picture attached.

Kind regards and thanks for your help
Beat

Hi Beat

You just need to replace the internal cork seals. They are available on ebay.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Daimler-Majes ... 0005.m1851.

These say for 104 and majestic change over tap but as far as I know it is the same tap on the conquest range.

Alternatively it is possible to make them yourself from some thick cork sheet.

Ok, great, thanks. Sounds easy.
Any problem in disassembling the change over tap?

Yes! You will need to dismantle the fuel pipes in order to withdraw them from the valve. I decided to remove the pipe between the fuel pump flexible inlet hose and the reserve valve; this looked likely to be simpler than removing the two inlet pipes from the tank, and allowed the valve to be removed from the chassis which made replacement of the corks simpler.

Have a fire extinguisher handy in case.

Cheers

Geoff

Easiest way to get the valve off is to
1. Remove the control cable
2. Slacken by a couple of turns the two inlet fuel pipes and the one outlet
3. Remove the two bolts attaching the tap to the chassis
4. this leaves you a bit of "movement" to remove the three fuel pipes.

You can then sit comfortably at the bench to strip and rebuild the valve!
Don't forget to soak the new corks in petrol or paraffin (oh no. not PARAFFIN!!!) for 24hrs...................put them in a dish, weigh them down with a nut or bolt and cover with petrol/paraffin. Top up as required if it evaporates!!

I had drips from both the reserve tap and the shut off valve (which is found on the DJ254). The problem is you need to drain all the fuel out of the tank before you can start work. It's a good opportunity to make sure the fuel lines are clear.
The reserve tap responded to cleaning up and tightening the screw that fits through the corks. The cut off valve had a slightly bent stem through the cork so I bought a replacement stem complete with cork and knurled knob. They are commonly used on 50s motorbikes and found on ebay. I was surprised how small the corks are and do think the reserve tap is rather primitive with no seals. I think it is best to leave it alone once it is leaktight.
I attach a scan of an article which was given to me when I got the car, I think it was probably in the DLOC magazine, it may be of assistance.

Bought my corks from the local classic bike shop, $2 each. They are common in old bike carburettors.
