During the haphazard preservation of my Consort I have decided to take the rear shock absorbers off and drain and refill them.
I have read the Girling manual and some previous posts and made the following assumptions.
There appears to be no drain plug.Do I just turn the unit upside down and work the arm to get the old oil out?
These units are not repairable, if they don't work they need to be replaced.
I need a straight SAE 20 oil to refill.
If anyone can give me further guidance it would appreciated.
Nick

"Nick - do you think you will ever put that old car back together again?"
Re: Consort Rear Shock Absorbers
Yes, invert and work shock till all oil comes out. Flush if necessary. I use motorcycle fork oil, it's readily available.

Re: Consort Rear Shock Absorbers
Why are they not repairable.
I have had lever arms rebuilt for both an MGB and an SP250, no problems.
Cheers

Re: Consort Rear Shock Absorbers
There is a recent YouTube of the restoration of the Consort by Denis Leys that showed Denis rebuilding the lever arm shock absorbers on his DB 18 Consort so,I don't know if it is correct to say these shock absorbers are not able to be repaired.
Check 1949 Daimler DB 18 Consort Resurrection.

Re: Consort Rear Shock Absorbers
I only assumed they weren't repairable as the Girling manual makes no reference to repairs.

Hi Nick,
The process doesn't look easy, but it does seem that it is possible.
Have a look at the video and see what you think. The whole series is very good, especially if you are also working on a Consort.
Cheers

Hi Nick,
I have been in contact with John Nash and he tells me that while the process is not cheap as it is labour intensive, he can recondition your shock absorbers.
Why not email John on:
John Nash: john@daimlerclub.co.uk
Cheers

You don't say why you think they need reconditioning Nick. Stevson Motors in Brum also specialise in this work

Re: Consort Rear Shock Absorbers
I don't know if they are serviceable or not. I was really looking at the worst case scenario. I was going to leave the shock absorbers until I had done other bits but since I've done just about everything else on and around the back axle I thought it would make sense to do the shocks.
Since the car hasn't been on the road for upwards of 40 years I was planning for how bad they could be.
I will definitely be watching the video but not today, got other priorities at the moment . I'll get one off and see how good or bad it is.
Thanks for all your pointers gents. I'll let you know in due course how I get on.
