A "Vintage Section" Forum?

Post by Stan Thomas »

Forum users will note we have two sections headed "Technical and Motoring" and "Technical Articles" - the latter of which is somwhat under-subscribed with both overlapping to some degree.

Would it not be an idea therefore in the light of there already being a segregation between Sp250/v8 and non V8's to re-title the "Technical Articles" forum as for "Veteran & Vintage Daimlers" - i.e. in keeping with the the globally accepted definition of cars made up to 1930?

I feel this would give greater credence to how we would be seen as a Club identifing the cars in our charge.

It sounds like a good idea. Considering that Daimler were in there at the start of all this car stuff. Some people may browse the forum expecting something along those lines.

The Technical Articles forum was requested by Big A'l very soon after this forum was started and peterb set it up. However, I agree that it hasn't been very busy. I expected it to have major restoration articles with lots of posts and photos like monkey (Kevin Monk) and Marc Mears posted on the Archive forum, but it hasn't worked out like that. We could merge Technical and Motoring Matters with Technical Articles or do that and separate Motoring Matters (Insurance, legal, political, etc.).

Regarding a Veteran & Vintage Daimlers forum, what are you expecting in it? The Daimler forum already covers older Daimlers, mainly from about 1930 onwards. Are you suggesting that we rename this Daimler forum? I've never seen any posts about pre-WW1 cars and few before 1930.

If we are to separate older cars from newer ones, what would be a suitable cut off date? I like to think of veteran and vintage cars as the ones with separate front wings, or fenders as our friends across the pond say, but cars up to 1960 are considered old and have flowing wings, almost visually separate, like the Regency, Empress, DJ254, Conquest, etc. We could call this group Veteran, Vintage and pre-1960 Daimlers.

We could have another forum for post-1960 cars like Majestic, Sovereign, DS420 and Jaguar/Daimlers although some models spanned 1960, but you have to set a date somewhere and 1960 is an important date for other reasons. [Edit: If the cut off date is to relate to when a model was first produced, then perhaps 1958 would be a better cut off date as that was when the Majestic was first produced.]

I would like to keep the cars with V8 250 engines separate as there are so many posts.

We would therefore have the following: Veteran, Vintage and pre-1958 Daimler Forum, Daimler SP250/251/450, 2.5 V8 & V8-250 Saloon Forum and Post-1958 Daimler Forum. Any comments?

Veteran and Vintage definition: http://news.hrowen.co.uk/definition-dil ... -old-cars/

I said recently that I wouldn't like to see too many forums, least of all one for each model, as some forums would be hardly used and just clutter the page. I like to see several models in the same forum as many problems for one are relevant to another model and reading them is good general knowledge.

I'd be in favour of a Section covering all our pre WW2 cars in one section.

Pre WW2 does seem like a good cutoff point. Whilst 1939 projects went on hold during the war and were wheeled out afterwards the market had changed dramatically and there was a race to catch up. There is a huge difference between a 1939 car and a 1950 one.

If a forum is set up just for pre-WW2 cars, I think it will get too few posts, basically for Daimler 15s and a few straight eights, so I would be reluctant to have a forum separate from pre-1958 cars. Cars just pre WW2 and just post-WW2 have a lot in common.

As a daily user, my feeling is that there are already too many sections.

I am more than happy to see everything, even if its very old or very new.

If we make more sections, we are encouraged to home in on our specialist subject, and ignore the rest.

(just because I own a DB18 doesn't mean I don't know about / have info on / source of parts and services on
earlier or later cars)

May I echo Dbnj's comments - although an SP owner, my interest ranges over cars from the 1920's to those of the present day.
I subscribe to a Mercedes-Benz (who have probably made more models of car over the years than almost anyone else) forum which covers all cars and has no age or model related sections at all. It works very well.

Yes I totally agree. As so many models share the same Daimler attributes - Fluid flywheel, preselect box, auto chassis oiling etc etc I read all posts in all forums. Keep it simple.
