Conquest coil
Eventually I'm nearing completion of another of my Conquests, doing bits and pieces in the evenings. Last night I attached the tappet chest cover and coil then the lead pulled out of the coil. I undid the knurled screw on the end but can't figure out what actually holds the lead in place. I was expecting some sort of split sleeve arrangement which tightens onto the lead when it is screwed down. Has something fallen out? I did think I heard something drop but can't see anything.

Re: Conquest coil
I think you may find that there should be a brass split washer (with a small hole in the centre), the lead wire goes through this and then is fanned out (put the lead through the screw first), then when pulled down the bottom of the knurled screw pushed the washer down when screwed into the coil that comes up tight and holds it in contact.
I suspect there are more 'techy' explanations but hope this is helpful.
All the best finding any missing bits that fell etc.

Re: Conquest coil
Thanks Antony,
I did suspect that as I could see a flat piece of some metal in the top of the coil so I think perhaps the coil wire has just pulled off. I guess I'll need a new lead in that case. Are HT leads available from the suppliers?

Re: Conquest coil
I tried to remove the metal with a magnet but it stayed put so I'll try and prise it out as it could be repairable.

Re: Conquest coil
Hello Andy, you may not need a new lead if you have enough length spare to make a new end, I suspect wire HT leads (or just lengths that you cut to size) are still available from car electric specialist as modern ones are carbon etc.
You may get the washer out by up-ending the coil and giving it a gentle knock/fiddle with a fine small screwdriver or point.

Re: Conquest coil
I tested several combinations of new and used capacitors and coils. Best and strong sparks came with original coil and capacitor. I noticed remarkable differenciens between old and new ones.
Re: Conquest coil
The washer is brass so it won't come out with a magnet. Try a small bi of masking tape held in tweezers with sticky side out, it will pick up the washer. Also as above advice no need for new cable just expose a bit more of the centre wires and push through the hole in the washer and bend back like spokes coming out from centre then refit and screw up tight.

Re: Conquest coil
Thanks all, yes once I realised it was brass I knew why the magnet wasn't working. As it happened it just fell out in the end so will reattach as advised.
