Daimler BD18 saloon Front Suspension

Post by Culbu »

Hello everybody,

I completely removed all the components of the both side front suspension : top and lower suspension arms, shock absorbers and theirs links, ball joints, kingpins, etc...

The mount of the left top suspension arm looks twisted. Is that the case or should it be as it looks on the attached pictures ? On the right side, the twist looks less important.

Thank you.

Julian

Julian,

I will have a look at our cars over the weekend, but suggest two things to check.

1) That the bolt holes are not worn oversize
2) That the connecting rod moves freely
(I am assuming that the rod is threaded to allow movement and adjustment)

more later

regards

db

Dear DB,

Thank you for your answer and for having a look at your cars this WE. Since my post, I found some pictures on the web and inseams that the mounts of the top suspension arms are twisted as mine is.

Anyway, the bolt holes are not worn oversize and the connection rod moved freely.

Julian,
I too found some distortion in the side pieces of the U channels when I overhauled my DB18 front suspension, but provided the upper transverse arms lie within the width of the channel, I don't believe that they need to be central to the channel.
I would be interested to know how it all goes back together, as I had a problem getting the four holes at the front end of the longitudiinal arms to line up with the corresponding holes in the wheel carrier. That's all part of the joy with working on cars built to 1950's engineering tolerances ;)

Mine looked like this too. I left it as it was and the reassembly was easy.
