Having finally started the job it proved relatively easy. Removing the rearmost bolt with the tank supported on a trolley jack gave enough clearance to remove the 6 bolts and extricate the sender. There was no hope of repair (see photos) so Matthew Beale was contacted and a new sender arrived. Refitting proved similarly straightforward except for understanding whether the float should be front to back or side to side. I can't remember my logic but think I went front to back as there is no real chance of acceleration or braking disturbing much :( . Now got to test it, to see if it registers empty before it really is.
