Your top photo is the main switch block between the wiring loom, battery and voltage controller. It is probably correctly wired, and I can even see a spare 35amp fuse sitting in the right place for it.

After cleaning it up, it should have a non-conductive cover attached to the four posts at each corner under the finger-nuts, mainly to keep muck out and prevent random shortcircuits. Some of those terminals have full un-fused battery amperage on them and can give quite a bite if shorted to the body.

You need to know whether your car is positive earth wired (original spec) or negative earth converted, which usually is done if generator is replaced with alternator.

Your second photo shows, apart from various animal and vegetable remains, the auxiliary power connector which gives a direct 12v connection to the battery. One side is active, the other grounded to chassis. With the correct plug it can be used to connect a 12v work-light, air pump or whatever. I use it mostly to attach a battery charger without having to climb under the back seat.

This forum doesn't allow PDF attachments, so here is a link to DJ250 electrical service chapters from the manual.

There aren't many DJ250s left on the road, so I hope you get on well with this one.

Thank you very much.
The original generator is still there.

I connected a battery and the ignition light illuminated but soon as I hit start it went completely dead, the battery has charge does this mean I've blown a fuse or a short.
i am still assesing the vehicle, removing and cleaning it up before I get to the engine.

1. You didn't mention turning the ignition switch - if the ignition light goes on before the switch is on, there is a short at the switch that must be eliminated before anything else.
2. There are only two fuses, in the junction box that you photographed. Easy to check those visually or with a multimeter.
3. You didn't say whether, after your attempted start, the lights or any other electrical devices would work. If not, the problem is on the battery side of the junction box. If other things work, the problem is local to the ignition/starter circuit.
Because the starter uses a solenoid relay, it is in two parts: 1) the control circuit that is operated by the starter push-button and is in parallel with the ignition circuit, and 2) the power circuit that is operated by the solenoid and is isolated from the ignition circuit, running directly from battery to starter motor.
4. Failure to start could be caused at a number of points 1) the push-button shorting, 2) the solenoid (mounted on the firewall below the regulator on the driver's side), 3) the direct battery connection to the solenoid, 4) the solenoid connection to the starter motor.

There is a rubber-covered push button on the top of the solenoid which is a manual over-ride. If you push down on that, with a battery connected, the starter motor should engage. If it does, then you know the problem is in the start-button circuit, possibly the whole ignition circuit. If not, the problem is in the solenoid or the starter motor.

These issues just need patient and logical following through. You will need to become self-reliant, and keep forum questions as specific as possible.

By the way, I see a previous owner has mounted what looks like a turning-light flasher unit on top of the identification plate just above the junction box. That plate will tell you model number and details needed for registration, parts specification etc. I would move the flasher unit off it.

Hi Dharmesh

I’d urge you to join the Daimler and Lanchester Owners Club where you’ll have access to copies of the manuals, expert advice from the model specialist and a thriving local branch full of people who’ll help you.
You can download the form off the website www.dloc.org.uk

All good advice but make sure you are in neutral and the handbrake is on before you push the button! You may well be familiar with the Daimler transmission but if not, select neutral with the gear selector and then press the gear change pedal. The pedal should stay close to the floor. Failure to observe this could involve an involuntary maiden voyage with you on the front wing ;)

okay then sorry for needing some advice and guidance i now know a Daimler forum is not the right place to talk about a Daimler. FYI i have diagnosed Seized pistons, so i will be rebuilding the whole engine as well as doing a recon on the head and changing to unleaded seats.

I was reading the posts on here with a lot of interest, and thinking how helpful people were being in response to your questions and photos, Dharmesh. I am amazed that you seem to disagree. I have read every post again and quite honestly cannot find anything that would explain your last remarks.

No i am greatfill I find it brilliant when like minded individuals help eachother out to expand the knowledge, but being told to "be more self reliant", and to post "specific stuff" is a strange comment to make, seems a bit uwelcoming or i am a burden. i am only being reliant because I need a bit of help I didn't have any diagrams until I asked the question on this forum.
But all in I'll thanks for all the help lads.
