Conquest Wheels

Post by Bonzodog »

I have been gathering wheels to paint up for a Conquest Century I am putting back on the road and have a pile of six. Five are identical but the odd one is slightly narrower, being about 138mm across rather than about 143mm. All six are marked 4 1/2J x 15. The odd one has been assembled with round head rather than flush rivets so I am thinking that the width difference is just a production variation.

I have read that Conquest and Century wheels differed (along with the respective brake drums). Does anyone know what the difference actually was?

Richard,

The Century wheels were deeper dished to accommodate the larger brake drums.

When you say dished I assume you mean that the middle section (where the stud holes are) on Century wheels is further out towards the outer rim than on "strict" Conquest wheels but that the rim width is the same for both. That being the case, I suppose this would effectively reduce the track of the Century cars by a corresponding amount (x2)?

Not quite, Richard, I may not have explained myself too well!! The centre section (with the stud holes) is the same relative distance from the rim, it is just a lot bigger to accept the larger drum, ie, the circumference of the dished bit is larger than that of the Conquest wheels

You can quite happily fit Century wheels to the "strict" Conquest, but not vice - versa. You will soon find out if your "odd" wheel is a Conquest in that it won't go over the drum!

The track remains unchanged.

Hope this helps
