Float level DMM

Would anyone know what the float level should be for the Daimler majestic major AUC 949 SU carburetor setting specification is?

I've never seen one specified. Provided you've got the right float and it's sound (ie not half full of fuel; give it a shake and check it's empty, mine wasn't!) and the float lever and needle valve are all ok, it's self setting. The usual setting for HD8 carburetters is that a 7/16 inch bar should just fit between the inner curve of fork of the needle valve lever, and the lid of the float chamber , with the valve just closed without compressing the spring loading of the needle ( assuming that your needles are the spring loaded type ). It's rather fiddly to adjust, as you need to bend the fork where it joins the shank at its inner point to achieve the setting

Thanks for that, I sent an email to Burlen and asked for the setting and as you stated its 7/16", standard setting and appropriate for my use.. I have the 2" carbs from a DMM on my ex-race 2.5 liter engine, the difference to where it was set to the 7/16" is night and day. I can now get the range of rpm out of the engine I had expected. Next step I need to confirm with the camshaft I have what the valve clearance should be.

Funnily enough, the day I replied to this was the day after I'd received and fitted my new needle valves from Burlen. Having failed to find the clearance figures, I'd just set them so they'd get maximum opening without any danger of them jamming on their return. Following Christopher's post I have re-checked the workshop manual - I'd initially scanned it for the sort of diagram you get in a Haynes manual - and indeed there it is, written down, only it says 9/16"...
